Biography

Sander Terbruggen (1972) is a self-taught artist and poet from the Netherlands. He started exhibiting his art in 2011. He also takes commissions (www.studioterbruggen.nl), usually as a graphic designer, webdesigner, animator or writer. His poems were published in multiple anthologies and literary magazines and in his first book of poetry 'Fantoom' (published by Uitgeverij Holland/Windroosreeks). At an earlier stage of his career Terbruggen worked as a biomedical engineer at the University Medical Center Utrecht and as an editor and writer for several Dutch magazines on science and technology (De Ingenieur en Technisch Weekblad).

Artist's statement

I am curious about the inner workings of things. I even have a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering to prove it. But how everything in nature comes together is inscrutable to me. The apparent chaos, hidden mechanisms and growth/development of all natural things are huge inspirations.

My art is about imitating (not copying) nature by recreating new parts in the form of images. Organic excrescences and non-organic building blocks form new organisms and (semi-)abstract objects. The (inner) construction of ‘organs’ and other elements often form the predominant part of the works that can look both organic and industrial.

The works are usually created without a preconceived idea so they can 'develop' freely. The endresults are usually produced as limited edition prints (max. 10 pieces) on aluminum or fine-art paper and sometimes animations. My primary tool is a computer with a wacom graphics tablet to create digital drawings and paintings. I only use images and (occasionally photographs) in my artwork that I created myself.
